Troubleshooting

Before anything else, run this:

fcitx5-diagnose

It checks both the session environment variables and the loaded addons, and points straight at whatever is missing — it catches most of what follows on its own.

Funput does not appear in the input method list​

Fcitx5:

  1. Run fcitx5-diagnose first.
  2. Restart the daemon: fcitx5 -r -d — except on KDE, see this warning.
  3. Reopen fcitx5-configtool, click +, clear Only Show Current Language, and look for Funput.

IBus: run ibus restart or log back in. See also the IBus page.

Check that you installed the package matching your framework: funput for Fcitx5, funput-ibus for IBus.

Open the Funput app from your application menu — onboarding may point out the missing step.

Funput is added in Fcitx5 but typing does nothing in applications​

This is almost always the session environment variables — redo step 3 for your session type. fcitx5-diagnose lists every variable with its current value.

Remember that the variables only take effect after you log out and back in, not after opening a new terminal.

If only some applications are affected (usually Qt or XWayland apps such as WPS), it is QT_IM_MODULE — see the Wayland block in step 3 and the Qt 6.8.2 note.

Typing works but no preedit shows (Chrome, WPS)​

Some applications hide the preedit. Fcitx5 can draw it on its own panel for those cases.

The Funput app also has a Type directly into the application → Enable direct typing switch (Overview tab): text appears in the input field itself instead of on an underlined line. The app itself notes this feature is experimental — where an application does not support it, Funput falls back to the old behaviour.

apt reports a dependency that is not installable​

Usually the wrong architecture — for example an amd64 package on an arm64 machine, or the other way round. Download the package matching your machine; see GitHub Releases.

Two input methods receive the same keystrokes​

You have both Fcitx5 and IBus active in one session. funput and funput-ibus can be installed side by side, but only one framework should be active per session — disable the autostart of the one you do not use, or remove that package entirely.

Removing the Funput repository​
