Wiring the session to Fcitx5 — special cases

Step 3 of the install guide is enough for most machines. This page covers what falls outside those three blocks.

Sources: Using Fcitx 5 on Wayland and Setup Fcitx 5.

environment.d has no effect

Step 3 writes the variables into ~/.config/environment.d/fcitx5.conf. That file is read by the systemd user manager, and not every display manager loads it. If fcitx5-diagnose still reports the variables as empty after you have logged back in, put them somewhere else:

LocationRead by
~/.config/environment.d/fcitx5.confGDM, and Plasma 5.22+ (whichever DM you use)
~/.bash_profile (remember export)GDM / SDDM / LightDM, and TTY logins too
/etc/profile (needs root)Every distro, applies to all users
caution

With environment.d, the Fcitx5 documentation notes that the systemd user manager can survive a logout — so while you are experimenting, rebooting is the reliable way to test.

Qt 6.8.2 and later

The Wayland block in step 3 sets QT_IM_MODULE=fcitx, which is right for Qt 5 and Qt older than 6.8.2 (they run through XWayland). If your distro already ships Qt 6.8.2 or later, replace that line with:

QT_IM_MODULES=wayland;fcitx

Note the plural: QT_IM_MODULES, not QT_IM_MODULE.

Your distro's own tools

On X11, instead of writing the file yourself you can use the tool your distro ships:

DistroTool
Debian / Ubuntu (and Mint, Pop!_OS…)im-config -n fcitx5 — writes the variables and starts the daemon. Run im-config with no arguments for a wizard.
Fedorasudo dnf install fcitx5-autostart — installs the /etc/profile.d snippet and the autostart entry. im-chooser (package imsettings) is the graphical equivalent.
Arch, openSUSE, everything elseNo dedicated tool — use the block from step 3.
im-config does nothing on Wayland

im-config sets no variables at all for a Wayland session — the /etc/profile.d/im-config_wayland.sh hook ships disabled. On Ubuntu/Wayland you still have to set them yourself as in step 3; im-config -n fcitx5 only affects X11 sessions.

Undoing an old im-config setup on KDE

If you previously ran im-config and it set all three variables, on KDE Plasma/Wayland they will make the candidate window flicker. Run im-config again and pick "do not set any IM … use desktop default", then set them again using the KDE block from step 3.

If a single application (one that only runs under X11) needs QT_IM_MODULE, set it for that app instead of globally:

env QT_IM_MODULE=fcitx wps

Do not restart Fcitx5 on KDE

caution

When Fcitx5 is launched from Virtual keyboard, KWin hands it a socket that a new process cannot inherit. fcitx5 -r (or "Restart" in the tray) leaves Wayland applications without an input method until the next login — log out and back in instead of restarting.

On GNOME and other desktops, fcitx5 -r -d is safe.

Check again

fcitx5-diagnose

It lists every variable with its current value, so it tells you directly which part of step 3 did not take.
