Funput on IBus

Funput ships two separate packages for the two input method frameworks:

This page is for the second choice.

When should you pick IBus?​

Pick IBus when you are on GNOME or Ubuntu and do not want to touch the session's environment variables. The default GNOME session is already wired to IBus, so funput-ibus works right after a single ibus restart — no logging out and back in the way the Fcitx5 route requires.

The trade-off: Fcitx5 is the more complete build. It can draw the preedit on its own panel for applications that hide it (WPS Office) — something the IBus side has no channel for — and it supports switching input method per application.

The two packages can be installed side by side (they do not fight over files). But only one framework should be active per login session: enable both and two input methods receive the same keystrokes.

Installing​

Add the repo.funput.app repository exactly as on the Fcitx5 route — see step 2 of the main guide — then install funput-ibus instead of funput:

This list mirrors how install.sh identifies distros, but Funput has not been tested on all of them. If your package manager reports a missing library, your distro is older than the machine the packages were built on — please report it on GitHub, or use the install into ~/.local.

This package also pulls in funput-settings — the shared Settings app — at the exact same version.

tip

install.sh installs the Fcitx5 build by default. Force IBus with the --ibus flag — see Other install methods.

Enabling the input method​

  1. Reload the engine: ibus restart (or log back in).
  2. Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → + → Vietnamese → Funput.
  3. Switch input source: Super + Space.
  4. Toggle Vietnamese while on Funput: Ctrl + `.

Updating​

Once the repository is added, updates are automatic, alongside your system packages:

If the input method misbehaves after an update: ibus restart, or log back in.

Troubleshooting​

  • Funput does not appear in the input source list: run ibus restart or log back in. Check that you installed funput-ibus and not funput.
  • Both packages installed and the input method behaves oddly: only one framework should be active per session. Remove the one you do not use, or disable its autostart.

Switching to Fcitx5​

To move to the more complete build: install funput (keeping or removing funput-ibus is up to you), then follow step 3 of the install guide and log out and back in.
